Quality Education to Underpriviledged Children

The Tripod Learning Foundation (TLF) is the brainchild of Leading Learning Ltd, which stands at the forefront of educational transformation in Nigeria, having managed, researched, and advised school operations from the cream of the crop of society to the disadvantaged members of the communities. This privileged position has helped us to recognize the critical role of education in bridging societal gaps and fostering sustainable development.

Mission

To support the delivery of good quality education to students in a manner that ensures they finish with options for a better living in the future

The Problem

The current state of education in Nigeria, particularly for students from underprivileged backgrounds, presents a significant and urgent challenge. The country, with its rapidly growing population now estimated at over 200 million, is witnessing an overwhelming strain on its education system. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reports over 20 million children in Nigeria are out of school. For those attending schools, there is a learning crisis, as the majority are not learning the basics of literacy and numeracy.

This double whammy leaves a vast majority of children in a precarious educational void. This issue disproportionately affects children from low-income backgrounds, creating a chasm between their development and what is available to their more affluent peers.

This educational gap has far-reaching implications, not only limiting individual potential and future opportunities for these children but also impacting the broader societal and economic fabric of Lagos. Addressing this gap is not just a matter of educational reform; it is a critical step towards social justice and equity.

Our Solution

To address these critical educational challenges, we have developed an innovative school model that directly targets the heart of these issues, in line with the SDGs and other global commitments. Our solution is designed to provide free, high-quality education to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, effectively removing the financial barrier that has long impeded access to quality education in underserved communities.

Highlight of our model:

  1. Free, high-quality education to children from underprivileged homes.
  2. Intentionally locate schools in high-density, underprivileged, under-served communities.
  3. Leverage partnerships with owners of underutilized facilities within these communities; for example, faith-based facilities and community centers.
  4. Establish funding partnerships and community engagement to ensure the sustainability and scalability of the model and program.
  5. Extensive teacher training, well-equipped classrooms, and learning environments.
  6. We are developing and implementing a robust curriculum under the nurturing of passionate educators.

About Us/ Advisory Board

The project is overseen by an Advisory Board, made up of seven seasoned professionals with vast experience, not only in the education sector but also in other functional sectors such as Finance, Human Capital Development, Marketing, and Project Management.

Our Progress so far

Here is a snippet of activities we have carried out to date in preparation for commencement:

  1. Foundational Structure: We have assembled an advisory board and operational team that operates from Mainland Lagos and Lekki Phase 1.
  2. Engagement with Potential School Partners: We are in talks with potential School Premises Partners (SPPs), three of whom are very promising and have, in principle, committed to offering their facilities to become schools.
  3. Recruitment of Head Teachers: We are in engagement with Teach for Nigeria to hire some of the best talents in the education space. We are also in talks with seasoned Heads of schools to mentor the selected teachers.
  4. Funding Model & Fundraising: Our funding strategy primarily is lightweight and dependent on shared resources with partners. Additional fund needs will be garnered from engaging with donors. The school does not charge students or parents of its students to remain operational.
  5. Financial Implication Mapping: According to our financial plan, the cost of educating a child per term (4 months) in our program including all associated costs and the current economic climate is approximately N145,000 or $100.
  6. Curriculum Design: We have agreed to use the Nigerian National Primary School Curriculum as a base, but it would be greatly enriched through careful research, and modern pedagogical and instructional aids to deliver our promise of quality education.
  7. Preparation of Policy Document: We have begun drafting policy documents to guide school operations, financial management, and child protection/ safeguards within our facilities.
  8. Standardizing the School Architecture: We have a seasoned architect volunteering to adapt existing facilities to the needs of the school, make them aesthetically and functionally appropriate for our operations while making the best use of funds available.
  9. Commencement Plan: Although we are in the registration process with the State Government, our plan remains to commence pilot operation in September 2024.
